    PokkiriRaaja Review – Ultimate Entertainer

Prithviraaj, Mammootty and Sriya in PokkiriRaja

Prithviraaj, Mammootty and Sriya in PokkiriRaja

Watch out for Mammootty’s Moon Walk :) .

Childrens Day ”
Double Strong ”

Drona Review – A different horror thriller

I am writing this review out of sheer anger. I had read extreme bad reviews of the new Malayalam movie Drona 2010. So my expectations was too low. But i liked the movie. Not as a Mammootty fan, but as a normal movie lover. And i am wondering why so many bad reviews for a movie which is NOT that bad. This is a perfect example of movie degrading by some fans. May be people who have not seen the movie are posting comments in different forums.

Shaji Kailas and Mammootty are together after 10 years. So naturally the hype was too much. And the trailer was too good. Expectation from the movie was very high.

Did it live up to the expectation? NO. There are some faults in the movie. And the biggest one is the climax. The bad climax had affected the movie in a big way. If you can forgive the climax, go and watch it.

First half of the movie is damn good. Lots of thrilling scenes and good action sequences.

Cinematography by Ekambaram is good. He has beautifully captured the old Mana.

    Mammootty in Drona

    Mammootty in Drona

Mammootty, as usual, looks cool in the movie. Kaniha is just ok. Navya Nair has nothing much to do. And Lakshmi Sharma played her part well.

The best thing about the movie is its super cool theme music by Deepak Dev.

Shaji Kailas has improved a lot. He has learned from his mistakes. The camera is stable in this movie :)   This is one of his best directed movies after Narasimham, Vallyettan and Chinthamani Kolacase.

Drona is a different suspense horror thriller. AK Sajan has done a wonderful job in writing this script. The story is not new. But the suspense element is there till the end.  Its after a very long time, that we are seeing a horror Malayalam movie.

Am not writing too much about the movie. Some reviewing sites have disclosed some of the major twists in the movie. My suggestion is – do not read reviews which tells you the full story.

    My Rating: 3/5

If Drona can survive this initial negative reports, it will turn out to be a hit.

I am sure this must be the first positive review about Dhrona 2010 :)

Go with zero expectations and you will like it.

I’m not a Mohanlal or Mammootty fan. I appreciate theirs as well as others characters in movies. Sometimes I like even villains more that the heroes.

We don’t need any more half baked stuff like “apart from climax it is good”, “first half is good, second half is dragging” etc. The movie should be good end to end. It should have a life of its own. And to be honest, AK Sajan is an overrated writer and I don’t know what happened to Shaji Kailas.

And even when you say that you are writing this not as Mammootty fan, it is pretty evident that you are subconsciously doing it.

My instincts say that this movie will prove to be a damp squib at the box office.

      @Emmanuel

I am a big Mammootty fan. But i didn’t write this review from the point of view of a fan. I wrote this out of frustration and anger. And i sincerely felt that the movie is not that bad as most of the reviews say. Don’t know what happened. May be mass hysteria for the reviewers. May be they are afraid to say something different about a movie which has got lots of negative reports. May be they expected too much.

A small change is required in thoma’s statement .If you can avoid the last 30 mins,it wil be better., You may like the movie if you are a mammooty fan . Only postive thing in the movie is Mamooty’s stylish look in both roles.

“If you can forgive the climax”! Why should I? This is not a free stuff [sorry not in my case! Thoma sponsored my ticket!] and when you are spending money on something it is quiet natural to expect a good return. After all will you accept a Enfield Bullet with single tyre?

“After all will you accept a Enfield Bullet with single tyre?”
Nice comment… But unfortunately this comparison is not applicable in case of movies. Because movies cannot be perfect. There will be mistakes in each and every movie. That is the reason why you don’t see a rating of 5 out of 5 for any movie.

You cannot call a movie crap only because of a bad climax. There are cases when we have forgiven bad climaxes. Some of the examples are Vandanam, Paleri manikyam, Bramaram, Kayyoppu etc etc…

    Renjith’s Kayyoppu Review

Am wondering why Renjith didn’t market such a wonderful movie.  Kayyoppu wasn’t marketed properly and got a silent release in a very few centers. In Cochin, it was released in Little Shenoys. I am sure, if the movie was distributed properly, it would have got a decent run in box office.

If you are a movie buff and if you like the good old ‘budhijeevi’ kind of Malayalam movies of 80′s, then don’t even read this review. Go and watch this movie as soon as possible.

The original DVD of the movie can be bought from Moser Baer site – Kayyoppu DVD

    Kayyoppu

    Kayyoppu

Kayyoppu is a brilliant piece of work by Renjith. The movie is very short and is less than 2 hours. The movie goes in its own pace.

Script and direction were too good. The scenes shot in the night and the scenes where it rains were shot beautifully and takes you to another world. The scenes in the police station was really touching.

Mammootty as a writer has excelled in his role. Mukesh, who plays a book publisher is apt for that role.  Khusboo, Neena, Anoop Menon and the room boy have also done a good job.

And i didn’t quite digest the climax of the movie. I still don’t understand why Renjith gave such an abrupt ending to the movie. But the rest of the movie is more than sufficient to bring your mind to an excited level.

Nandanam, Kayyoppu, Thirakkatha and Paleri Manikyam – Is Ranjith the next Padmarajan in making?

Already waiting for Mammootty – Renjith team’s next movie, Ravu Mayumbol

    My Rating – 7.5/10

A must watch for all serious movie lovers.

    Story and Direction – Renjith

    Cinematography – Manoj Pillai

Starring – Mammootty, Mukesh, Anoop Menon and Khusboo

Paleri Manikyam Review – A wonder which happens once in a while

Watched Paleri Manikyam, Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha (A midnight murder story) from PVR, Bangalore.

Directly jumping to my rating – 4 out of 5 stars

I am short of words to describe this brilliant movie directed by Renjith and performed to perfection by Mammootty. The movie belongs to Ranjith and Mammootty.

Palerimanikyam is a strong movie which haunts you for a while after leaving the theater. Not even a single scene, character or dialogue can be removed from the movie. Direction is top class. Narration style is good. Dialogues are excellent. Art direction and camera work are good and suits the theme of this period movie.

Kudos to Ranjith for making this movie. I cant think of any other director who can execute this movie so perfectly.

    Paleri Manikyam Poster

Mammootty plays a double (?) role in this movie. Mammootty has once again proved that he is one of the best actors in India with his exceptional portrayal of Ahmed Haji, a cruel Muslim landlord. His looks, mannerisms and body language are so real that you wont feel that Mammootty is acting in the screen.
On the other hand, Mammootty as Haridas looks young, smart and cool.

With Paleri and Loudspeaker, Mammootty is a strong candidate for the Best actor National award in 2009.

Most of the actors in the movie are new faces and they have performed their roles well. These actors come with theater backgrounds. Thanks to Renjith for bringing out so many talented artists.

I dont know how many have noticed a hidden story in the movie. That of Haridas’s family life. There is an inner meaning to that part and the fact that it is not explicitly told makes it even more beautiful.

    My Rating for movie: 4/5

My rating for Ahmed Haji (Mammootty) : 4.99/5 – I am sure there is a lot of acting skills left in his career. Hope his best is yet to come. Long live Mammookka.

A must watch for all serious movie lovers. The strong theme, visuals, violence and language are not advisable for the weak hearted and children. The film has got A certificate.

Excellent Movie. Ahmed Haji was portrayed exceptionally well by Mammootty and it’s one of his remarkable performances. I felt that the character Sarayoo (Gowri Munjal) was not really needed in the movie, except for highlighting a character trait of Haridas (Mammootty) which he might have got from his parent ;-)
